What do you think about future of electric vehicles? I think these vehicles not only play the vital role of preserving our environment, but are also economically viable and affordable to all. What are your views?

Electric motorbikes still have a long way to cross before getting reliable or becoming competent with the fossil powered ones. We need to have new innovation and technology in order to make motorbikes more green.

I had a conversation with a friend last weekend regarding this very topic. It's funny because his argument was that we want our vehicles to run on electricity to save the environment, but we fail to think what produces the electricity. It is still the power plants which is either coal or nuclear. Still bad for the environment.

Electric vehicle are only economically viable if their power comes from solar and not from nuclear or coal.
I think there will be a long time until they are available for cheap price and have the power to get them really "green2.

yeah. we're a long way from harnessing solar power as the main energy source of our vehicles. It would probably work if you attach a huge solar panel on your roof like the ones you see on discovery channel. ;-)

Many commuters are slowly switching over from petrol driven two wheelers to noiseless and pollution free Electric vehicles. They are trouble free and effortless to operate. The batteries can be recharged simply.

I think the automobile manufacturers are still having problems with the batteries. When they develop a reliable battery electric vehicles will be here to stay.

Wind Power is getting a lot more focus now. It could be a major player in the future. The technology is already developed and performing, however the problem at this point is the transmission lines. The wind farms are often times located in remote areas where there are no transmission lines.

I saw on tv where they are developing a film-type solar cell which comes in rolls. It will be much easier to manufacture and the cost will be much less than current solar cells.

I have just read through this post with interest and noticed the point that most people seem to have overlooked is that at some point in the not to distant future we will run out of fossil fuel... I am a Barge Engineer on an oil rig and it has always amazed me that it has taken nature millions and millions of years to produce a product that we can use to power the world and it has taken the human race less than 200 years to use it in its near entirety. The technology and the rescources already exist in the world today to totally elliminate the use of fossil fuels and the only thing that stands in the way of this and the only reason you are not already using cars and bikes with alternative fuels is money and greed.

All of a sudden, we are at reality time. Ignore the scare depicted in the recent film, “Day After Tomorrow”. Ignore even Prof. Lovelock, declaring his support for nuclear plants to stop global warming. Without all that, your own experienece will tell you that we have hotter days, longer summers, scantier rainfall and floods spreading wider.
It is time to modify purist, fundamentalist environmental positions and choose among lesser evils, even as we hope and wait for the magic bullet. That’s the merit of Prof. Lovelock’s stand. That’s also why electric vehicles are better than gasoline ones. Of course, electricity must still be produced --mostly using coal-- in power-stations, but being fewer they can be monitored and controlled. After all, they are now investigating technologies that can trap CO2 at power station chimneys and then stuff it deep into the earth where it will cause no harm,—and may if fact, do some good.
The biggest offender today, it is clear, is the automobile as we know it. Electric vehicles always capture our imagination for the obvious difference they can make. The state of California, USA took the lead in spurring electric vehicle research: it mandated that 10% of all vehicles sold in that state must be electric. Even that minor step was a major scare for accountants in big car companies; they have now succeeded in getting that law diluted. It may be a few decades before cars go green.
That is why an exciting electric vehicle initiative in India is good news for friends of this planet. Bajaj Auto is set to launch the Eco-Rick, an all electric auto-rickshaw, in September this year. It can travel 130 km between charges; each full charge takes 7 hours. A few demo pieces have been running around the Taj Mahal, Agra where gasoline vehicles are banned. During the 3 year trials, the vehicle design has acquitted itself. Bajaj will produce about 60 Eco-Ricks per month initially, each vehicle costing Rs.1.5 Lakhs.
The electric drive that powers the Eco-Rick, began life as a darling of solar car enthusiasts who race their concept cars over hundreds of kilometres in the USA and Australia. A novel design by Dean Patterson of Northern Territory University [NTU] of Australia is very popular among university teams that build solar cars. It is worth understanding it.
